Thank you from the Triad region

It is so hard to believe that just one week ago, the Triad was completely frozen in ice and snow. The record-breaking storm left over 80% of our county residents without power, including almost all of our Triad members. It was a tough week with outages, lost wages, school cancellations, property damage, and major loss of food in all our homes. As rough as it was for our TPB Triad members, it was especially hard for the vulnerable populations in this area. Here at The Produce Box, it is our mission to impact our communities across the state and we responded to that need.

All of the donated community boxes for this week were delivered Friday morning to Greensboro Urban Ministry- we gave 600 shares of produce! That is over 60 boxes of fruits and vegetables!

All that fresh produce will be distributed today in the Family Bags distributed to Triad families in need. When we reached out to the director about donating she was so happy, she cried, remarking, “Our families are going to be so surprised! No one ever gives us produce.”

Sometimes being a small, local company has its challenges as we work out the kinks in our distribution process and overload our own online ordering system J, but it also has its blessings because we are a part of our community and when we see a need around us, we can act on it and make a real impact. Just like we did this week in a few simple phone calls- turning our desire to help into real action. 

So when your family gathers around the table together this weekend, remember that somewhere nearby another family is able to do the same thing because of the food you helped to put there.

If you’re trying to decide if a Produce Box membership is for you, you may be wondering, “Can’t I get this stuff at the grocery store? And is it cheaper there?” Well, the answer to both those questions would be sometimes. The grocery store doesn’t always have everything the farmers of North Carolina can offer.  And sometimes, you may not like the reasons WHY the grocery store is cheaper. Farmers make pennies per pound from the grocery stores, and they often have to wait 30-60 days (or MORE!) to get their payment. At The Produce Box, we pay every single one of our farmers when they deliver the food to us.  In addition to this, the produce at the grocery stores often comes from across the country (1500 miles on average!) or even other countries, and has traveled for days or weeks to get to you -- it's definitely not the most fresh choice or LOCAL by any means! Keep in mind, too, that by buying from us, you’re also supporting their effort to DO GOOD in our communities.

Growing Practices in NC: What do They Mean?

At TPB, our conviction is to BUY LOCAL FIRST, above all else. We advocate for supporting our NC farm-partners, and every week, we choose to buy from our neighbors, rather than ship products from California or other countries, organic or not. We are transparent about our farmers' practices, and leave it up to our members to determine their value system as it relates to buying organic, pesticide free, local, etc.  Here's a quick run-down of several farming methods and classifications you may see at farmers' markets, grocery stores and on our weekly menu as well. We identify these growing methods if they are applicable on the website ordering page:  ORGANIC:  This certification prohibits the use of chemical fertilizers, various synthetic substances, irradiation, sewage sludge, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in organic production.  It also prohibits antibiotic and synthetic hormone use in organic meat and poultry, requires 100% organic feed for organic
