2017 with The Produce Box - celebrating 10 years!

Wow! 10 years! Can you tell we're so excited to be celebrating our 10th year making
fresh local produce deliveries to you and your family? We have come a long way since we started deliveries out of my garage with the help of just one farmer, y'all. Here's some funny memories that pop into my head from those early days:

  • When we started we only had three box choices - the A, B or C Box! All the same size!

  • How many of your remember TAPING A CHECK to the inside of your Box??? That was our sophisticated payment system!
  • What about our VERY first non-produce item you could add to your Box... Lily's Maple Butter!
And then today...

  • We deliver to more than 10,000 families across the state from Charlotte to Wilmington!
  • We buy more than 2 MILLION pounds of local North Carolina produce from over 70 small to large farmers.
  • Almost 250 stay-at-home moms (and dads!) help deliver those delicious Boxes!

  • Our members helped us donated almost 1000 Boxes worth of fresh fruits & veggies to local heroes like firemen, policemen and kids in need in our NC communities.

What a great community! We have so much to be thankful for at The Produce Box and so much to be excited about that's coming this year. You'll be seeing lots more variety, meal kits and an easier way for you to search and find what you want on our menu.

All the good our members are doing and have done in the past 10 years is just amazing! I want to thank you for being such an important part of our community and wish you a Happy New Year with The Produce Box! Eat those veggies!

If you’re trying to decide if a Produce Box membership is for you, you may be wondering, “Can’t I get this stuff at the grocery store? And is it cheaper there?” Well, the answer to both those questions would be sometimes. The grocery store doesn’t always have everything the farmers of North Carolina can offer.  And sometimes, you may not like the reasons WHY the grocery store is cheaper. Farmers make pennies per pound from the grocery stores, and they often have to wait 30-60 days (or MORE!) to get their payment. At The Produce Box, we pay every single one of our farmers when they deliver the food to us.  In addition to this, the produce at the grocery stores often comes from across the country (1500 miles on average!) or even other countries, and has traveled for days or weeks to get to you -- it's definitely not the most fresh choice or LOCAL by any means! Keep in mind, too, that by buying from us, you’re also supporting their effort to DO GOOD in our communities.

CSA vs. TPB: How do they compare?

Guest post from a TPB Neighborhood Coordinator A few years ago, I thought being a part of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program was the best way to source my family's fresh food. It’s a great way to support a local food system: invest in the farm at the start of the growing season and get a weekly share of the crops throughout the harvest. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I joined The Produce Box and realized how much it operated like a CSA, but worked much better for my family. Wondering how they compare? While the cost for the whole season is comparable, a CSA requires a hefty payment at the beginning of the season (or several large payments spread out over the season) to help the farmers procure, implement, and maintain everything they need for the year's crops.
