Eating AND Doing good with The Produce Box and Charlotte charities

Learn about our contributions to Second Harvest Food Bank and PORCH and how YOU can get involved!

Part of our mission at The Produce Box is to “Eat Good. Do Good. Feel Good.” For us, doing good involves donating produce to local charities.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHFBM) is a non-profit with four distribution warehouses that give food and other groceries to non-profit or other community agencies that then serve people in need. SHFBM serves 14+ counties in NC, mostly on the Western side of the state. They partner with almost 650 agencies, including soup kitchens, emergency pantries, residential care facilities, homeless shelters, senior programs, and low-income daycares. Last year, they distributed 46 million pounds of food and other essential grocery products!

Second Harvest offers a wide variety of programs for kids, seniors, disaster relief and more. Approximately 80% of the food SHFBM distributes has been donated to them -- that’s where The Produce Box comes in! You can help by continuing to buy from The Produce Box which allows us to support this nonprofit, or you can personally contribute to SHFBM. Every $1.00 donated = 7 pounds of food….every 1 pound of food donated is 1.25 meals for a hungry neighbor!

PORCH (People Offering Relief from Community Hunger) was founded in Chapel Hill in 2010 and is completely run by volunteers. Some of our neighborhood coordinators work with the Charlotte branch, which was founded in September 2015. PORCH’s mission “is to make eliminating childhood hunger as simple and effective as possible for everyone involved.“ The way PORCH works is simple. Every month, they hold neighborhood food drives where all you have to do is place a bag of food on your doorstep, which will be picked up by a volunteer and then sorted into meal bags that go to area schools. In the bags are three options each for breakfast and dinner, six snacks, as well as canned and FRESH fruits and vegetables. We at The Produce Box make weekly donations to PORCH. We love to hear that underprivileged kids are getting those nutrient-rich fresh fruits and vegetables they need and we are so happy to be a part of the PORCH mission!
