Community boxes from our members make DOUBLE the difference

Thank you so much to those of our members who have purchased a Community Box for donation to local food banks, food pantries or soup kitchens!  Did you realize when you purchased this box you are supporting TWO sides of your community?  This dual impact on our communities comes from the assistance the food provides to those who are hungry and from the income generated for those who grow the food!



TPB has been donating hundreds of pounds of bulk produce each week to the Interfaith Food Shuttle for years. Then it occurred to us we could help even more by getting members more directly involved so we started the Community Boxes.  

These boxes are packed with fruits and veggies grown by and purchased from our local farm partners then are delivered to a variety of locations that help feed the hungry.  Soup kitchens cook the produce for those who have no kitchen. Food Banks offer them to low income families who could not otherwise afford fresh produce. Sometimes they goes to programs designed to help homeless families gain permanent independence.

Here is a list of some of the locations TPB works with across the state:

Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network has spent the last 20 years addressing homelessness and its causes. Their mission is to provide temporary stability to homeless families as they work toward permanent independence, in addition to promoting action and awareness regarding homelessness in Raleigh and the surrounding area.  Each evening in Wake County, shelter, meals and transportation is provided for up to five families each, serving up to 10 families every night. Millbrook UMC works with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle to provide produce for senior citizens in need.  The Carying Place in Cary teaches homeless, working families with children life skills for attaining independent living while providing short-term housing and support services to address their individual needs.

In the Triad area, Community Boxes are usually taken to Renaissance Road Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen. Every Saturday they feed over 50 families (175 people). TPB is their only source for fresh food for these families.  Donations are also made throughout the year to Greensboro Urban Ministries Food Bank.  They collect and redistribute good, edible food to as many as 110 people a day.  In addition, our Area Managers will use these boxes if they hear of a family in acute need such as job loss or illness including Ronald McDonald House families. Charlotte and Wilmington areas do much the same as the Triad and work with their local food banks and soup kitchens.

If you’re trying to decide if a Produce Box membership is for you, you may be wondering, “Can’t I get this stuff at the grocery store? And is it cheaper there?” Well, the answer to both those questions would be sometimes. Keep in mind, too, that by buying from us, you’re also supporting their effort to DO GOOD in our communities.

CSA vs. TPB: How do they compare?

It’s a great way to support a local food system: invest in the farm at the start of the growing season and get a weekly share of the crops throughout the harvest.
